Templer 10 – 1st November

South Devon AC was well represented by 12 runners at the Templer 10 on Sunday November 1st, the event saw a new HQ and a new start at Stover school. The run incorporates the picturesque Stover park and a stretch alongside the river Teign. David Hampton, again first man home for the club, was 5th with a cracking time of 1.02.04, Colin Peters wasn’t far behind in 17th place and 1.08.07, new runner for the club, Kevin Ashworth-35th in 1.12.36, John Drennan in great form was 126th in 1.29.04 closely followed by the first lady back for SDAC, Sue Hayes, 130th in 1.29.55. 152-Roger Webb (1.32.57), 178-Chris Shuttleworth (1.36.34), 192-Val McClean (1.38.05),198-Heather Maddock (1.38.42), 200-Heather Coverdale (1.39.22), 218-Tracy Elford (1.43.38), 229-Steve Maddock (1.49.52).

SDAC 3k Series – 27th October

South Devon AC held their second 3k Winter series race for the Darren Turner Trophy on Tuesday evening, 27th October. Dave Hampton set the pace with a little more in reserve 10.02, followed by James Dent 10.55 and guest runner Jamie Duffield 11.16 (nice to see him back), they stayed together until James pushed the button and opened a gap. Fourth man was Ian McClean 11.31 followed by Kevin Ashworth 12.02 who fought off one of last Sunday’s marathon men Marc Jones 12.03. The next two could not be separated Mark Stockman 12.27 and marathon man Rod Keen also 12.27. Then came a battle all the way down the finishing straight for 1st lady Sue Hayes 14.00 just getting the better of Val McClean 14.03 and Krissy Taylor 14.05. Next home John Drennan 14.29 followed by the race monster Roger Webb 15.00. Lucy Carpenter 15.10 fought off Tracy Elford 15.13, Marina Blay 15.29, Erica Warwick 15.44, Heather Coverdale 16.31. Then the ever popular Ken House 20.35 who asked “what happened to the front to back Rule?”. Next race will be 25th November; guest runners are welcome.

Tavy 7 – 25th October

Heather Maddock, Steve Maddock, Roger Webb and John Drennan took part in the scenic Tavy 7 run around the edges of Dartmoor and organised by Tavistock AC. First back for SDAC was John Drennan 160th in 1.00.28, 191-Roger Webb 1.02.15, 229-Heather Maddock 1.05.39 and 284-Steve Maddock 1.11.51.

Dartmoor Vale Marathon – 25th October

Meanwhile also on Sunday 25th October Marc Jones decided on a whim to enter and run the Dartmoor Vale Marathon. He stormed round in 3.53 04 only a minute off a p.b. and beating his previous course record by 10 minutes.

Bristol to Bath Marathon – 25th October

Nicola Wasbrook and Rod Keen ran the inaugural Bristol to Bath marathon, this was Nicky’s first marathon and she ran a fast time of 3 hours 57 minutes, Rod had been Nicky’s running buddy and he also finished in 3.57.

Amsterdam Marathon – 18th October

Marc Walpot of South Devon AC continued his 50th birthday celebrations by travelling to his home country of Holland and running in the Amsterdam Marathon, he finished in 3.51.46.

Churston Flyer – 4th October

On a dull, slightly chilly but dry day South Devon AC hosted the Churston Flyer, a 5 mile race, on Sunday 4th October. The race starts on Bridge Road, runs towards Brixham on country lanes and finishes at Churston Grammar school. Supporters were entertained by the Brixham Ukulele band, cakes were on sale with profits going to the Williams Foundation, plus there was a coffee van and a masseur on hand. The race was won by Torbay A.C’s Pete Monaghan in a time of 27.41. First lady was Naomi Flanagan running her first race with Torbay AC in 30.40. Torbay A.C. also won the team prize. SDAC fielded two runners on the day, Dave Hampton who came 3rd in 28.39 and Rory Treharne who finished 31st in 36.38.

Churston Flyer Fun Run – 4th October

South Devon AC also hosted a fun run in the grounds of Churston Grammar School. A good entry of keen runners enjoyed the near mile course and good performances were seen from all ages. Stand out results were 1st girl Raphaela Donaghue from Torbay AC, 1st boy and overall winner Dan Luckham all the way from Tavistock and 1st SDAC member and 3rd over the line in 6.13 Francis Hayes.

Armada Autumn Trail – 27th September

South Devon AC continued their Grand Prix series with the Armada Autumn Trail, an 8 mile race including river crossings starting and finishing at Newnham Park near Plymouth. Colin Peters raced home to come back first for SDAC in 13th place and a great time of 50.10, hot on his heels was the come back kid James Dent 19th in 51.32, 120-Krissy Taylor (1.06.58), 127-John Drennan (1.07.43), 162-Roger Webb (1.12.13), 168-Val McClean (1:12:32), 172-Marina Blay (1.13.12) and 211-Tracy Elford (1.20.19).

SDAC 3K Series – 22nd September

South Devon AC chose one of their in house regular 3k races (starting at Preston Marine Drive and back to Torbay Leisure Centre) for their 9th Grand Prix event. This 3k however was a very special evening as many of those who ran knew we had a world record holder running as a guest, Martin Rees who is on holiday in Shaldon. Martin, aged 62, holds 55 world records including a 10k at Cardiff earlier this month in a time of 33.20. Our own David Hampton knew nothing about Martin or his records but as usual he started the race at an unbeatable pace finishing in 9.49, having had trouble on the way with a white van man. Martin chased him in earnest finishing second in a very respectable 10.07, he was followed home in third place by James Dent on his comeback trail in 10.50, 4th Rod Keen in 11.12, 5th Colin Peters in 11.17, 6th Marc Walpot-11.22, 7th Marc Jones-11.46, 8th Ian McClean-11.51, 9th Kevin Ashworth-11.58, 10th Mark Stockman-12.07 (p.b.), 11th Rory Treharne-12.09, 12th Dave Bamforth-12.27, 13th John Drennan-14.16, 14th Mark Holman 14.25 (p.b.) 15th Roger Webb-15.00. The ladies race was a battle until Louise Lewry pulled away in the home straight to be first home in 13.04 with Sue Hayes 2nd in 13.30, 3rd Val McClean-13.37, 4th Krissy Taylor also in 13.37, 5th Marina Blay-15.07, Tracy Elford next in 15.14 just edging out Erica Warwick also in 15.14. Parkrun – Bovey Tracey – 5th September

On Saturday John Drennan competed in the regular parkrun at Parke, Bovey Tracey. John had a splendid run and came 5th out of 111 in 29.49.

10 Peaks Brecon Beacons – 5th September

Marc Jones travelled to Wales to run the Brecon Beacons 10 Peaks Challenge. He was 51st out of a 100+ runners finishing in 20 hours 20 minutes. Marc calculated that the distance was more like 58 miles and there were 15 peaks rather than the advertised 10!

City to Sea – 5th September

Four South Devon AC members took part in the City to Sea race at the weekend. Mark Stockman tackled the 53 mile ultra marathon which started at Exeter and continued to Brixham, onto Berry Head and back to finish at Babbacombe Downs. Mark was 10th and completed the course in 11 hours and 48 minutes. Three club members ran the 23 mile race from Exeter to Watcombe; Nicola Washbrook came in 24th and 4.28.03, Steve Hookins 34th in 4.50.22 and Karen Bumby was 49th in 5.30.39.

Forest Flyer and Dartmouth Royal Regatta

Rob Leeke was the only member of South Devon AC to compete in the Forest Flyer on Friday 28th August; he came 20th in a time of 34.30.
Rob then ran the next day in the Dartmouth Royal Regatta Road Race to come 31st in 35.10. Naomi Flanagan continued in her excellent form and was again 1st lady at Dartmouth in 18th overall position and 33.10. Other SDAC results 40-Ian McClean (36.28), 46-Rod Keen (37.09), 52-Marc Jones (38.06), 95-Keith Belt (42.21), 133-John Drennan (48.01) and 135-Roger Webb (48.35).

Torbay Regatta 10k – 23rd August

South Devon AC chose the Torbay Royal Regatta 10k for their championship race and David Hampton again proved his colours by coming 8th and a with a blistering time of 35.34. Naomi Flanagan continued her fantastic form by sweeping aside all competition to come home 1st lady, in 24th place overall and a winning time of 37.52. Other results were 31-Colin Peters (39.16), 52-Rob Leek (40.48), 64-Marc Walpot (42.02), 85-Marc Jones (43.13), 100-Rod Keen (44.34), 149-Keith Belt (47.27 and 2nd male O65) 173-Louise Lewry (48.38), 177-Nicola Washbrook (49.15), 198-Sue Hayes (49.58), 272-Roger Webb (53.19), 313-Mark Holman (55.31), 331-Tracy Elford (56.03) 326-John Drennan (56.22) and 534-Steph Bartlett (1.08.40).

Geopark Triathlon – 2nd August

Vince Langdon, Poppy Holmes, Val McClean, Ian McClean

Four SDAC members tackled the tough, standard distance Geopark Triathlon at Goodrington on Sunday August 2nd. Ian McClean was 25th in the vet male category with a total time of 3.38.43 (46.31 swim, 1.44.10 bike and 1.03.49 run). Vince Langdon was 45th in the male master category, total time 4.08.36 (44.24 swim, 1.49.26 bike, 1.27.36 run), Poppy Holmes 12th female vet, total time 4.21.24 (39.04 swim, 2.06.21 bike, 1.31.25 run), Val McClean 15th female vet, total time 4.42.12 (44.58 swim, 2.16.13 bike, 1.34.26 run).

Totnes 10k – 2nd August

Naomi Flanagan and Michelle Cowley did South Devon AC proud when they were again 1st and 2nd ladies at the Totnes 10k. Also running for the club was Marc Walpot (the Flying Dutchman) who was celebrating his 50th birthday. Many of Marc’s relatives had come over from Holland for the celebrations and 8 members of his family were running at the Totnes races on Sunday including Tim Walpot, Marc’s nephew who was 40th in 41.23 and Marc’s dad, Izaac, who is 81 and who won the over 70 prize.

Cornwood 10k Challenge – 25th July

The girls done good at the Cornwood 10k Challenge with Naomi Flanagan and Michelle Cowley coming 1st and 2nd ladies. 9th-Naomi Flanagan (39.46), 14th-Michelle Cowley (40.34), 97th Nicola Washbrook (53.22) and 159th-Ilke Hatter (59.38).

Naomi beat her time of last year for this race by 2 minutes 37 seconds and also beat the ladies’ course record by 1 minute 54 seconds. Michelle was also over 1 minute inside the old course record and 3 minutes faster than her time last year. Well done!

Kingsbridge Carnival – 23rd July

Brian Marjoram, John Drennan and Roger Webb took part in the Kingsbridge Carnival 10k. Times: 83rd-Brian Marjoram (52.54), 128-Roger Webb (59.13), 137-John Drennan (60.42).

Chudleigh Carnival – 17th July

At last week’s Chudleigh Carnival Race Dave Hampton was again first back for the club in 4th place and 32.00, 98-Dave Naish (45.51) and 178-John Drennan (55.30).

Haytor Heller – 18th July

Well done to the nine SDAC members who took part in the Haytor Heller on Saturday, 18th July. Naomi Flanagan was first home for the club, coming 20th in a time of 47.45, followed closely by Colin Peters, 22nd in 47.59. Marc Walpot finished 51st in 53.05, Rod Keen was 57th in 53.43 and Marc Jones was 79th in 56.13. Other results were Mark Stockman – 122 (1.01.44), Gemma Body – 138 (1.03.11), John Drennan – 184 (1.07.55) and Roger Webb – 193 (1.09.50).

Race to the Stones – 11th July

Steve Hookins competed in the Race to the Stones, a 100k ultra marathon run on the iconic Ridgeway Path, the oldest in Britain. The path goes through traces of generations stretching back over 5000 years and finishes at the neolithic stone circle at Avebury. Steve came 397th out of 1000 starters, took 16 hours and ran past 10 people in the last mile. He is now suffering from very achy feet.

Newton Abbot Carnival Race – 10th July

A lone representative from South Devon AC ran in the Newton Abbot Carnival race held on Friday evening July 10th. The 5k race was run on trails around Decoy Park. John Drennan completed the 5k in 28.17.

6 Moor Miles – 5th July

At the 6 Moor Miles race organised by Plymouth Harriers and run on open moorland on the Maristow Estate near Yelverton, Dave Hampton blasted round the one lap multi terrain course to come 3rd in 39.12 and winning the senior male category, Dave Naish was 80th in 54.53, Roger Webb 146th in 1.03.01 and John Drennan 154th in 1.04.35.

Charmouth Challenge – 4th July

Also congratulations to Jean Grierson-Jackson from South Devon AC who came out of retirement to run the Charmouth Challenge on Saturday July 4th. This is described as the most southerly fell race in England and includes an ascent of Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast. Jean completed the 8 mile run in 1.24.12, 134th out of 231 runners and winning the O60 age group prize.

Bovey Tracey Parke Parkrun – 4th July

Naomi Flanagan, running for South Devon AC, had another triumph last weekend when she broke the ladies’ record at the Bovey Tracey Parke parkrun. Naomi was 3rd overall, first lady, a p.b. by 31 seconds and she set a new ladies’ course record by 8 seconds. Her time for the 5k course was 20.21. The Parke parkrun is held every Saturday at 9.30a.m. and is free to enter.

Erme Valley Relays – 3th July

On Friday evening 3rd July, South Devon entered three teams in the Erme Valley relays. SDAC’s first team back and in 12th place was Dave Hampton (13.22), James Dent (15.07), Rod Keen (15.53), and Ian McClean (15.54) total time 60.16. Second team in 40th place and with Ian McClean running again consisted of Ian (15.59), Robbie Forbes (17.23), Vince Langdon (18.47) and Colin Peters 15.19) total time 67.28. The ladies team came 47th and comprised Gemma Body (16.37), Krissy Taylor (18.59), Nicky Washbrook (18.43) and Michelle Cowley (14.56) total time 69.15. Michelle’s time was only 8 seconds behind the fastest lady on the night.

Ironman 70.3 UK – 28th June

Meanwhile two of South Devon AC members were competing in the Ironman 70.3 UK event at Wimbleball Lake on Exmoor. Ryan Rudge completed the swim in 38.55, bike 3.39.34 and run 2.11.17 with a total time of 6.39.04. Marc Jones’ swim was 42.43, bike 4.15.15 and run 2.09.40 with a total time of 7.19.36.

Torbay Half Marathon – 28th June

On a rainy and cool morning there were some fantastic results for South Devon Athletic Club at the Torbay Half Marathon. Michelle Cowley had a stupendous run to finish in 58th position – 5th female overall and 2nd female in the female open class. Michelle’s time was 1.26.53. Second back for the club was Colin Peters, crossing the line in 63rd place and under the one and a half hour mark in 1.27.57. 168-Marc Walpot (1.35.37), 184-Rod Keen (1.36.08), Robbie Forbes (1.39.43), 413-Dave Naish (1.47.01), 414-Louise Lewry (1.47.02), 465-Kerry Bell (1.48.59) 2nd female O50, 501 Nicola Washbrook (1.49.18), 588-Sue Hayes (1.52.30), Lucy Carpenter (2.04.41), Roger Webb (2.04.57), Tracy Elford (2.08.01), Steve Waddington (2.08.21), Chris Shuttleworth (2.09.27), Heather Maddock (2.15.07), Steve Maddock (2.16.48), John Drennan (2.17.22). This was the 7th Grand Prix event for the club.

SDAC Grand Prix Beaches Run – 9th June

On Tuesday 9th June SDAC had its ‘Beaches Run’ for the 2nd year – also a Grand Prix event. The race started at South Sands, Goodrington and went to the end of Preston Beach and back on the same course – a distance of 3 3/4 miles. Although very windy conditions, this did not stop 6 of the 10 who ran last year getting PB’s. There were 22 runners in total this year.

Dave Hampton flew from the start; his nearest opposition being fromNaomi Flanagan and Michelle Cowley. Dave drew clear to win in a PB time of 21:42, followed by Naomi in 23:15 PB and Michelle in 23:55 PB.
